Signs and Symptoms of Human Growth Hormone Deficiency
Growth hormone deficiency is classified into two major categories: adult growth hormone deficiency and pediatric growth hormone deficiency.
The adult growth hormone deficiency is further categorized as: child-onset adult growth hormone deficiency and adult-onset adult growth hormone deficiency.
Causes of Growth Hormone Deficiency
Various causes, such as, a defect in the development of the pituitary, genetic factors, injury / trauma to the pituitary gland, infections, tumors of the pituitary or brain, irradiation to the skull and idiopathic reasons are responsible for the occurrence of GHD in adults.
Symptoms of Growth Hormone Deficiency
In Adults:
The symptoms of both the sub-categories of adult growth hormone deficiency commonly include: truncal obesity (increase in body fat deposition especially, at the abdomen), reduced muscle weight, decreased density of bones, development of atherosclerosis fatigue and reduced energy levels.
Other manifestations include: changes in the body’s constitution, changes in blood lipid levels and alterations in mental health. There occurs accumulation of visceral fat inside the abdomen which increases the deposition of fats in the blood vessels leading to serious heart problems. It also results in diminished capability to exercise because of muscle weakness and lowered stamina. Reduced sensitivity to insulin is seen. Changes in the lipid profile include: increase in circulating triglycerides, increase in LDL cholesterol and decrease in HDL cholesterol.
GHD affects the mental abilities, has an impact on mood, diminishes energy levels, reduces interest in various activities and hobbies. Depression and disinterest in sexual activity are also known to occur.
In Children:
The major symptoms of pediatric growth hormone deficiency include: drastic decrease in the growth and development of the body to almost less than 2 inches a year. The child has a short stature, delayed milestones, increased deposition of fat about the abdomen and face, delayed puberty, slow development of teeth and anxiety about their appearance. However, these symptoms do not appear until the child reaches two or three years of age.
Treatment of Growth Hormone Deficiency:
HGH replacement therapy, using Somatropin or bio-synthetic growth hormone helps make up for the deficit and helps manage most of the symptoms of the deficiency effectively.
