Is the Human Growth Hormone Detectable?

Athletes, body builders and aging adults are often accused of using growth hormone illegally.

Sports persons are made to undergo HGH tests, which detect the presence of the hormone in the blood. For the past few years, several professional sports personalities have got habituated to the use this hormone to enhance lean muscle mass and physical endurance and stamina. They are often checked for the illegal use of the hormone by testing for the hormone’s occurrence in their body fluids.

Growth hormone is found to be detectable in blood and undetectable in urine. It can be detected within 72 hours of its administration. If the person has injected the hormone before 72 hours of the test time, then the hormone does not get detected, and he comes out clean without any accusation.

The illegal usage of this hormone is possible because, some physicians allot HGH as a medicine off-label, to various aged people and athletes.

HGH, when given in the bio-synthetic form, has a half life period of 2 hours. As the natural hormone is synthesized in the first 2 hours of sleep, there would be around 4 hours of time for it to get retained in the blood. Hence, it is detectable till that period of time. Moreover, children have high levels of the growth hormone, while adults after 30 years of age gradually reduce their ability to synthesize the hormone. According to the age, the detection of this hormone varies.

In a research study conducted by M Sohmiya and Y Kato, published in the journal of endocrinology and metabolism, the recombinant human growth hormone was injected at the concentration of 2 microgram/kg, at the rate of 2 mL/hour for 150 minutes. Then, the clearance of this hormone level was observed, using highly sensitive immune assays. It was found from the above study that, the clearance of this hormone by kidneys is more in aged people than in young people. Even, the metabolic clearance rate was found to be higher in the aged than in the young. But, the half life of GH in aged and young did not differ. So, GH was detectable without any influence by age, although the renal clearance is more in adults than in children.
