Human Growth Hormone for Kids
The human growth hormone is secreted naturally in children in large quantities till puberty. After puberty, the levels of the hormone decrease gradually in the human body. The deficiency of this hormone in children was addressed in 1950s with the administration of bio-synthetic HGH.
Initially, the artificial form of the hormone was obtained from dead bodies and was given to the deficient children. Later, the synthetic form of this hormone was manufactured in the form of injections or pills or tablets or powders. The synthetic form is also called the bio-engineered form of GH. FDA has given the approval to Eli Lilly Company to manufacture the HGH injections and market it worldwide. The first drug was known as Humatrope. This brand was allotted mostly to kids with a short stature, but healthy in all other aspects.
The studies done at Eli Lilly laboratories revealed that kids with idiopathic short stature (ISS), when administered the synthetic form of this hormone were able to grow about three inches taller than those with growth hormone deficiency. A Six year old boy, deficient in growth hormone was administered GH injections for 1.5 years. His height increased by four inches.
It takes 6 injections per week, at a cost ranging between 20,000 dollars to 40,000 dollars per annum. However, some side effects are known to occur. These are: a risk for diabetes, bone growth near the hip region, and enlargement of the breasts. The research work done at Eli Lilly laboratories, involving 300 kids, shows that the GH therapy could add about 1.5 inches height with 3 injections per week, to the ISS kid’s final adult height. It has also been shown that the therapy can add up to three inches height by taking six injections per week.
A normal kid will demonstrate a growth in the height, about two inches per year. If the kid has GHD he will grow normally till he reaches two to three years of age. Later, there occurs a delay in the growth mechanism. The child may have growth failure due to several other reasons. If other reasons are ruled out, GHD is checked and growth hormone stimulation is done by clonidine and Ldopa. Then the GH therapy is given to make the kids reach normal height.
