Hormones And Miscarriages
How hormones play a role in miscarriages?
Miscarriage or abortion is likely to occur due to hormonal causes during the first ten weeks of conception. After the first ten weeks, the placenta takes over the production of various hormones, and hence, hormonal deficiency can’t be a cause for abortion after this time.
A low level of progesterone, a hormone that is produced by the ovaries during the second half of the menstrual cycle, is the common cause of abortion. This hormone works towards thickening the uterine endometrial wall, which is critical for the implantation and growth of the embryo. The hormone is responsible for ensuring adequate blood circulation in the uterine cavity, and low levels can cause abortion. The deficiency of the progesterone hormone is often caused due to the ‘luteal phase defect’. After ovulation, the follicle transforms into the corpus luteum, which secretes the hormone progesterone. However, when the corpus luteum fails to produce adequate quantities of the hormone, the uterus fails to sustain the pregnancy. Ideally levels of progesterone should see a surge within 48 hours of ovulation. Low progesterone level is also treated as a symptom of non viable pregnancy by many doctors.
In addition to low levels of progesterone, thyroid disorders, namely hyperthyroidism (a condition characterized by increase production of thyroxine hormone), is considered to be a cause for spontaneous abortion.
Hormonal Management for miscarriage:
In order to manage the low levels of progesterone, progesterone suppositories are prescribed to patients to elevate the levels of progesterone and make the pregnancy viable.
As an alternative Clomid, a drug is prescribed to patients to elevate the levels of the hormone. However, the selection of the patient for hormonal treatment depends on several factors, as usage of the drug can reduce cervical mucus, which in turn can affect fertility.
Anti Thyroid drugs also play a crucial role in the management of hyperthyroidism, which can interfere with the ability of conceive normally.
Preventing miscarriage Naturally:
There are different ways to prevent miscarriages in women, immaterial of the cause of miscarriage. Here are a few tips,
• Diet plays a critical role in sustaining a pregnancy. It is recommended that the female should avoid alcohol, smoking, refined foods, tinned or canned foods, foods with artificial colors, etc. Stimulants like coffee, tea, etc also need to be avoided.
• The diet should be nutritious and wholesome. Include fresh fruits, pulses, cereals, whole grain, fresh vegetables, etc in the diet. Figs, cashewnuts, almonds, apricots are rich in Omega 3 Fatty acids, minerals and vitamins, and help in maintaining pregnancy.
• Avoid strenuous work. Weight lifting or heavy exercise can increase the intra abdominal pressure, which in turn may not be conducive for implantation and growth of the embryo. Avoid straining at stool and use natural laxatives to promote normal bowel movements.
• Bed rest is recommended during the first few weeks of conception, especially, if there is a history of abortion. This improves the chances of completing the pregnancy.
